Some of the Best SoBo Sights

Last fall we asked Peninsula Post readers to tell us about their favorite things to see across SoBo – landmarks, structures, artwork – and why they liked them so much. We printed the results in our October-November 2023 issue, and we post them online now, in the chill of winter, to bring a smile to your face and remind you of why this is such a great place to live. – Editor

There’s a specific tree at Fort McHenry park that I love to sit by and reflect. I never was much of a tree admirer, but something about this particular, solitary tree along the harbor-facing side of the seawall trail is stunning. And the view of the water from that spot is like no other. – Brandi Mebane

My favorite view is in Riverside Park. You’re walking up the path and suddenly a view opens that you can see and, when you look up, there’s the playground. And in the distance, you can see the swimming pool. You even see squirrels playing around in the trees. – Daniel Nies (age 7)

The mural by the Locust Point Community Garden brings color and excitement to Haubert Street as you walk to the waterfront. It also highlights the beauty and green space of the community garden with the sunflowers that grow there. – Dave Arndt

The Domino Sugar mural on Key Highway East, across the street from the 7-Eleven. I love that it’s so unassuming, tucked in a little doorway. It looks like a giant bag of sugar and makes me smile every time I see it! – Megan Boddy-Pickard

The Whirley Crane at the Baltimore Museum of Industry represents industry and the people who worked for the benefit of all. The crane stands loud and proud with its bright green paint, and the dancing, varied colored lights grace it at night. – Laura Van Faasen

When I walk down Light Street to go to the library, I always love seeing the giant cat mural on Weber Street. The cat always seems to be watching for me. – Kathie McCleskey

The Domino Sugars sign is a Baltimore landmark. I see it all the time from around the Inner Harbor. – Bob Wallace

The Domino Sugars sign is iconic to Baltimore. My kids used to call it the “sugar sign at the sugar factory” when they were little. – Marianne Navarro

The Domino Sugars sign is historic, it’s beautiful, anchors our neighborhood in the city, and it looks great in fog or clouds. It’s my beacon home. – Shari Shea

The Fort McHenry seawall trail with a beautiful vista of the river and the coolest place in Baltimore during the dog days of August heat. – Michael Seipp

The flag at Riverside Park makes me smile every time I see it. – Laurie

Fireworks over Camden Yards when the Orioles win! Fireworks plus Camden Yards plus an O’s win: what’s not to love about that? – Stacy

I can’t pick just one! Here’s a partial list of my favorites: The beautiful blue steeple star atop St. Mary Star of the Sea church, with a backdrop of the moon and stars at dusk. The view from the Fort McHenry seawall trail of the industrial port and even cruise ships through a veil of cherry trees. An overgrown, fenced-off alleyway on Key Highway between the Baltimore Museum of Industry and the Fire Department building that my boys and I pretend is a jungle with hidden, exotic creatures stalking in the shadows. The not-so-secret gardens in the immaculately maintained Robert Baker Park on Light Street that includes what appears to be the Shel Silverstein “giving tree” nestled in the far corner. The Bluebird of Happiness sculpture, sparkling mirror tree, and the museum building itself at the American Visionary Art Museum. And the view from the top of Federal Hill never gets old. – Melanie Nies
